Ported from old site.
Here's a quick note for anyone using Amazon EC2.
I use a script to automatically create EC2 snapshots a la ec2-create-snapshot ... this then sends me an email notifying me that the snapshots have been started.  Today I got a email that looked like:
Client.InvalidSecurity: Request has expired

Basic DNS Security

Post ported from old site.
Basic DNS(BIND9) Security -- and I do mean basic -- comes in the form of two simple options placed in your named.conf options {...} section.  The first is to turn off recursion and the second is to hide the bind version.
Why do we want to do these things?

Configure CISCO device for SSH

Post ported from old site

In my previous post "Using Java to scan a local network for available IPs (From an old blog, the post refrenced was not ported)" I said I would post the ports of PHPs ip2long and long2ip functions at a later date.  I had intended to wait longer, but it's been kind of slow for me on the blog front the last couple weeks.  So here they are.

Convert Putty .ppk file to OpenSSH Keys

This is one I constantly forget and have to look up over and over, probably due to not having to do it very often. To convert and install keys from your Putty PPK to linux ( Ubuntu ).
  • Install putty with: sudo apt-get install putty
  • Create the public key file:
  • puttygen /path/to/puttykey.ppk -L > ~/.ssh/
  • Create the private key file:
  • puttygen /path/to/puttykey.ppk -O private-openssh -o ~/.ssh/id_rsa
